April is here and to fans across America, that signifies the start of baseball season as well. The Fightin' Phils are back and well, they're not doing spectacular, but hey, there's still 160 games left right?
In our first two games against the Braves, we've only scored one run and allowed eight. Our offense isn't really coming through in the clutch either. We're hitting 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position and on Tuesday night, we left 11 men on base. On top of that, in the last game of the series, we're down 10-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Is this enough reason to worry?
I really don't think so. As the defending champions, a lot are looking for the Phils to repeat last season's success. In the end, today's events should become a big reminder for the Phillies and I'm not talking about the Braves beating us again.
Before the opening pitch, the World Series Champions received their rings. The rings, featuring 103 diamonds for their 2008 wins, (92 regular season and 11 postseason,) were kept a closely-guarded secret. Few knew what the rings would even look like, but the appearance is not what's important about these rings.
Each and every one of those diamonds represented a major league battle that the Phillies won. These diamonds are a true testament to the amount of hard work that it took to take the city of Philadelphia back to the winner's circle. If our Phillies really want to get back to that point, then they need to work just as hard, if not harder, than they did last year.
