This year, Spring Break is not Cancun, Aruba or the Bahamas. Trust me, if I had the money to make that happen, I would, but who wants an island in the Caribbean when you can have the jam-packed city of Clarks Summit at your disposal?
Yeah, I really didn’t expect anyone to raise their hand there, but oh well. It works for me and besides, everyone’s talking about vacationing students getting kidnapped in Mexico. Last time I checked, getting kidnapped by some gaucho is not something on my list of things to do for 2009.
With a week and a half of time away from school, how am I going to spend this time? Catching up on that schoolwork would be a good idea. Maybe I should get around to reading that material for my political science midterm. But no, I’ve got a much better idea than that.
I’m going to sleep late, for no reason whatsoever. At least at first, I am definitely going to just sleep in for the hell of it just to catch up on all of the sleep I’ve missed during this semester. Don’t get me wrong, I can definitely function on four hours of sleep, it’s just starts to get annoying when you fall asleep during an exam and wake up to find the professor hovering over you as you admire the drool drawings on your test paper.
Never fear though, that hasn’t happened yet this semester. Although I wouldn’t be surprised how often that does happen across the country. As a personal gripe, why does it seem like you have this one professor every semester that seems to think that their class is the only one you’re taking? You know the situation, it’s rough, I know.
So when I should be doing the work for that teacher, I find myself just sitting around in my house appreciating the little things. For one, how my mom always seem to clean everything in my room just before I come home so that I can still see my reflection on my desk. But, in all seriousness, that’s not the only reason I love coming home every once in awhile.
You never seem to realize how much you really miss living at home until you taste that food. Maybe it’s just because I’m a guy, but I love coming home for the food. Aside from that, getting to be around your family again is always a bonus.
Especially when they haven’t seen you in a while, that’s the best. You come back home and let them know about all of the good stuff that you’ve been doing lately, and they just seem to love you more than ever before. That is, unless you let that story slip about that party the other weekend where you were the reigning champ in beer pong. Then, you get stuck in one of those family lectures, but that’s beside the point.
What matters is that you’re home. So, again, how are you going to spend your time? Getting back late Friday night, I had one goal and that was to simply enjoy sleeping in a normal size bed for a change. But, some friends from high school were still in town, (their spring break was the week before), so we all decided to go out and find something fun to do.
Keep in mind that we’re in what I called the “jam-packed city of Clarks Summit.” With that said, what sort of crazy good time did we get caught in? In all reality, and I kid you not, we simply drove around for a good two and a half hours. Along the way, we ended up struggling to find a parking spot in downtown Scranton, stopping at Northern Lights, and walking around Wal-mart.
I know that this may be sounding like a pretty boring night, but if you think about it, I was with people that I haven’t seen in a couple months, so it didn’t really matter what we were up to. It was just a really good time catching up on what everyone’s been up to at college.
I eventually got home and then just relaxed for the rest of the night. Saturday wasn’t a really exciting day at all, I ended up just sitting around, watching Sportscenter and playing video games. In retrospect, that was a pretty solid lineup. Towards the end of the night, I went down to Green Ridge to go see my brother and aunt and uncle at the bowling alley.
After visiting for quite some time, I called it a night and, right before going to sleep, seriously considered starting of all of that catch-up work. That plan didn’t work out too well.
Sunday morning turned out to be a lot like Saturday’s. More Sportscenter and laziness, but this time, I added a bowl of Wheaties to the mix. The saddest part is that I remember looking at the famous athletes on the cereal box and having a desire to go work out or jog around the block. Yeah, that plan didn’t work out too well either. Did I mention that I sat around and watched Sportscenter?
Later on, I decided to spend the rest of my day at my aunt and uncle’s house in Dupont. Their place is only a 25 minute drive down the turnpike, so it was nice to hop in the car and go for a drive. Granted, I was still pretty lazy from all of my morning television watching, so I settled for just turning on cruise control.
Once there, we decided to sit around and watch movies, so it wasn’t really a huge departure from what I was doing before. But, it should be noted that they have this great 60-inch behemoth of a television. Sportscenter in high definition? I’m down.
True to tradition, my aunt made her world famous hot wings and I really couldn’t be happier. 60-inch HDTV? Check. Comfy couch? Check. Good food? Check. Oh yeah, I’m home and I’m loving absolutely every minute of it. I would up staying until around 11:30 p.m. and then enjoyed the convenience of cruise control once again as I locked the car at the speed limit and made my way back home.
So yeah, about that work. I’ll take care of it today, maybe. Then again, I really wouldn’t want to start anything without knowing all of the latest sports news. I’d better check out Sportscenter first before I even think about picking up that political science book.
